Mosaic Moments 2025: Shared Threads

This year’s theme honors the humanity and history of each of us, recognizing we all have stories to tell and experiences we can see ourselves in across intersectional identities and lived knowledge. Our Mosaic Moments series over the month works to foster cross-cultural, cross-community, and cross-campus connections. We will celebrate local legends, unfamiliar histories, and innovations to come, emphasizing the shared threads of boldness, hope, advocacy, service, love, and joy.

Story Club Pittsburgh Presents: Story Slam!

Tuesday, March 4, 7:00 PM - 8:30 PM
Alphabet City, 40 W. North Avenue, Pittsburgh, PA 15212

Please join the Center for Student Diversity & Inclusion as part of your Spring Break plans! We will explore the North Shore and the powerful narratives of others at City of Asylum’s Alphabet City for Story Slam.

Story Slam asks:
What happens when we tell stories? What do we discover about ourselves—and each other—when we share?
With these questions in mind, Story Club Pittsburgh (created by the former producers of The Moth Pittsburgh) organizes and hosts Story Slam, a monthly nonfiction storytelling series at City of Asylum. A charming mix of open mic nights and live theater, each month Story Club selects a theme and welcomes volunteer and spotlight storytellers to the stage. No matter the theme, strangers and friends always show up with a story to tell, each new perspective reminding us of all the ways we are connected and all the ways we make this life our own.

The Center will reserve 10-15 tickets in advance. Please let us know to hold a ticket for you by completing the Story Slam registration. We will confirm your attendance by email.

Mosaic Equity Luncheon: Intersectional Hi(stories) & Lived Knowledge as a Roadmap for Resilience

Thursday April 10, 12 PM - 1:30 PM
Rangos Ballroom 3, Cohon University Center Second Floor

Her/story. His/story. Their/story. History is all about storytelling. This event acknowledges that history favors those who are given the power to recount events and tell the narrative from their perspective. With that in mind, The Center for Student Diversity & Inclusion and SLICE are hosting a student-alumni-staff-faculty mixer that centers the narratives of those with diverse backgrounds.

This mixer focuses on personal storytelling from those with rich lived experiences born out of their unique intersectional identities. Key storytellers will spend time with small groups formed so participants can engage in a more inviting and intimate Q&A session centered on experiential roadmaps to success. We will also feature two tables to engage with: an Archives table with materials on gender and sexuality activism at CMU through the decades and a Community Partners table to share resources and ways to get involved in equity work around Pittsburgh. Lunch will be provided.

Register for the Intersectional Hi(stories) Mosaic Equity Luncheon.

We Were Here: The Untold Story of Black Africans in Renaissance Europe

Friday, March 28, 5 PM - 7 PM
McConomy Auditorium, Cohon University Center

We are pleased to welcome Fred Kudjo Kuwornu, an Italian Afro- descendant filmmaker and activist, to Carnegie Mellon University on Friday, March 28, for a screening of his documentary “We Were Here: The Untold Story of Black Africans in Renaissance Europe.” The screening will be followed by a conversation between Kuwornu and CBESA Director, Dr. Mame-Fatou Niang and Dr. Giuseppina Gemboni, professor in the Department of Languages, Cultures & Applied Linguistics. This event is free and open to the public.

"We Were Here" uncovers the hidden presence of African and Black individuals in Renaissance Europe, revealing their representation in masterpieces by iconic artists of the time. How did they come to Europe? Why were they portrayed? Were they all servants and slaves? The film challenges the conventional narrative that has long overlooked their significance in the works of these celebrated Renaissance masters, telling the unknown exceptional stories of African-Europeans who were princes, ambassadors, saints, artists, professors, and knights."

Sponsored by the Center for Black European Studies & the Atlantic (CBESA), the Center for Student Diversity & Inclusion, the Humanities Center, the Center for Print, Networks and Performance (CPNP) and the Center for Arts in Society (CAS).
